Immunomodulatory Activity of Begonia Medicinalis Ethanolic Extract in Experimental Animals

Benalu batu (B. medicinalis) is a plant endemic to Central Sulawesi that has been reported possess anticancer, antioxidant, and antiviral activities. The mechanism of action these activities still unclear. This study aimed evaluate the immunostimulatory effect ethanol extract B. medicinalis on an in vivo model by measuring macrophage phagocytotic activity cytokine production tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) male mice rats, respectively. was obtained maceration method for 3 × 24 h using 70% ethanol. doses were 60, 120, 240 mg/kg body weight (bw). percentage phagocytosis TNF-α, IFN-γ levels measured eighth day, one hour after intraperitoneal injection Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. result showed activated dose-dependent manner, with significant increase expression TNF-α IFN-γ. optimal dose bw, higher phagocytic than Stimuno® as positive control other dosage treatments. suggests immunomodulator provides scientific basis traditional usage this herb plant.
